She earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Marquette University in 1998. Kathy holds a Pennsylvania K-6 Teaching Certificate and is a fluent Spanish speaker.
Her varied experience includes teaching first and fourth graders in a New York City bilingual public school and serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Nicaragua where she taught practical environmental science. Evelyn Peña, originally from the Dominican Republic, came to the US in 1985. Growing up in the Dominican Republic she was surrounded by children which instilled in her a strong devotion to children and love for education. When she began a family of her own, she decided to homeschool her three daughters while working as a Nursing Assistant. Evelyn was determined to learn English alongside her family, while keeping her Dominican culture and native Spanish language alive in her home.
Evelyn has over 20 years experience working with children. She has provided childcare in her home, supported other families in homeschooling, taught Sunday School, and taught at Lehigh Carbon Community College's Early Learning Center prior to joining La Escuelita.
